It’s a boy! (kitten)

March 7, 2010

Haha.

So, we went to get flea medicine for Mavado (or Lil’Mo as he’s sometimes called, actually I just yell “Kitten!” and he comes running) and we end up getting another kitten.  We didn’t get him from the pet store, he was being taken care of by another shop owner that the pet store lady knew.   His name is Yoda and he’s TINY!

Here is Mo meeting Yoda for the first time:

Yoda is part Turkish Van which is why he has such unusual markings on his head and tail.  They’re also unusual because they like water, which was amazing when we bathed him.  I have never given a cat a more pleasant bath, I’m used to being clawed to death!  He didn’t care at all.  Mavado, on the other hand, always acts like we’re trying to drown him.

Mo still hasn’t come to the realization that we got this new little guy FOR him, and he’s very jealous and pissed.  There have been some signs of wanting to play with each other though.  Tonight Mo got super-frisky and tried to play but Yoda was too freaked out, he got all puffy and hissy.  I just find it hilarious when something so cute tries to look so mean, I was laughing my ass off.  Watching them is better than having a TV.  Since we only got the new one yesterday, I think it’s a pretty good sign that they’ll be playing with each other soon.

I know I’ve been a bad blogger lately and I apologize.  I’ve just been really preoccupied with getting the house ready and finishing up some work projects before Nasrin arrives.  I’ve also made some new friends here which is so exciting for me.  I feel like I’m finally getting a social life back, which I’ve been desperately craving!  The only downside is they’re both English teachers and their both leaving in June when their contracts are up.  I understand though, we want to move out of Adana as well.  There’s far more interesting places to be.

My mom is going to be here in ten days and then we’re going to go into baby-prep overdrive!  I’m so excited to see her, it’s been since June!  I’ve never gone that long without seeing my mom.  She’s staying with us for six weeks.  I have a feeling that with everything going on I may not be blogging much, but I’ll try to keep you guys updated!  You can also friend me on Facebook if you haven’t already (click on the facebook link to go to my profile).

Yes, my name is Jen and I am a Facebook addict.  “Hi Jen…”

My Lolcat =^..^=

February 20, 2010

Yeah, so I was bored one night so I made an LOLcat from one of the millions of pictures I’ve of taken of Mavado

I submitted it to icanhascheezburger, but who knows if it will ever get posted.  It made me laugh, hopefully it makes you laugh too.

(ps, if you’re wondering what he’s sitting in, it’s suitcase that I converted into a computer case.)

New Year, New Kitty

January 2, 2010

Our New Years celebration was pretty low-key.  We went and had lunch at his grandma’s apartment, and as we were walking back we spotted a little fuzzball playing in the dirt in between the buildings.

Reading my mind as usual, hubby said, “Do you want to take him home?”

“Let me see if I can catch him first.” I said.

Strays usually run, but this little guy didn’t even try to get away.  I knew he was a stray though because he was filthy, his eyes were crusted and his stomach was all swollen with worms.  I scooped him up and managed to keep a hold of him until we got back to our apartment.  He immediately got a bath, he didn’t seem to mind too much, more just confused at what these strange people were doing to him.  The water coming off of him was almost black.  After the bath he curled up on my neck and wouldn’t move.  Hubby went out to get him food, litter and worm medicine.  I eventually pried him off my neck and fed him a can of tuna.  We’ve been bffs ever since.  He’s already a total lap-cat.

We named him Mavado, after one of my husband’s favorite reggae singers.

(BTW, if you’re worried about a stray cat being harmful to my pregnancy, fear not.  I’ve had outdoor cats my entire life and I worked at an animal shelter for two years.  I’m sure I’ve been exposed to Toxoplasmosis and therefore have an immunity to it.  Even so, I don’t handle the cat litter as a precaution.)

Cleanin’ out my closet AKA random stuff from my blog folder

October 16, 2009

I have a blog folder on my computer, I’m sure I’m not the only one.  It’s just a growing image folder that contains random pictures that I’ve grabbed off the internet, thinking “hey I can write a blog about that!” but then it gets filed away and forgotten.  Well no more!  Time to clean out my blog folder.

As I was going through them, some clear category emerged.  Number 1:

  • Crazy foreigners on scooters…

This topic fascinates me because I see this all the time in Turkey.  Set belt?  Nah.  Helmet?  Nah.  Weight restriction?  Nah.  Child seat?  Nah.  Legal?  Yep!

For me this was part of the culture shock from styrofoam-encased, over-protected America.

I Love This Cat!

September 11, 2009

This video has been cracking me up all morning, I can’t stop watching it.  Can you freaking believe what this cat is doing?!

I’ve seen cats do a lot of weird things, but nothing like this one.  My cat Ecko used to sit on my stomach while I was in the tub (big person, small tub, I was never completely submerged), but whenever we’d actually get her wet she would scream like a human.  I had to bathe her once because she peed in her carrier on the way home from the vet, and I was afraid the neighbors were going to call the cops, she was that loud.

All Quiet On The Blogging Front

July 28, 2009

I’ve noticed a general silence this week among most of my blog friends, in both posting and commenting…myself included.  Hope everyone is okay!  Probably just busy with life…myself included.

As you can see I’ve been slowly but surely catching up with my Weeds recaps, although I’m not sure if many people are interested.  That’s okay, I’ll just keep on plugging and hope that I can find some fans will find me through google or something.

So this is sort of an update post on what’s been going on in my life.

In general I’ve been bogged down with work.  New clients keep crawling out of the woodwork, as it seems that we are the only kids in town who know anything about Linux.  Microsoft has all the technicians here pretty well brainwashed, so there is a serious need for good Linux solutions.  Because anyone who knows anything knows that Microsoft is crap.  I can’t go into too much detail because of confidentiality agreements, but one client needs to be able to send streaming video web broadcasts from around the world, and another client needs an automated sound decibel monitoring device for clubs.  I tell you, coffee shops are excellent places to make new connections!

In some tragic news, my favorite cat, Otis went missing from my mom’s three weeks ago and has not been seen since.  If you remember, we were sharing a house with my mom, so he was very comfortable with the environment, and didn’t run away because of a sudden change.  Our cats and dog go in and out as they please through the dog door, and out of all my cats I’d say Otis was the most “street smart” and usually pretty cautious.  My mom put fliers with a picture on every door up and down the block, but she got no calls.  I have a feeling he’s not coming back.  I’m devastated.  I spent a whole day in bed a few weeks ago crying.  The worst part is I’m thousands of miles away and I can’t help look for him.  I kept having dreams about finding him, I’d wake up and call my mom to see if there was any news, but there never was.  He lives in my dreams now.

My poor Bubs...I hope you're in a better place.

My poor Bubs...I hope you're in a better place.

Okay, enough tears and sadness, I have good news too!

I’M GOING TO HAVE A BABY!

Where there is death, there is always new life.  I just found out a few days ago, it’s really early, probably only a few weeks.  We’re super excited, we’ve been wanting this for awhile and we just started trying.  I haven’t told the whole family yet, just my parents and some close friends, so please don’t say anything about it on my Turkish blog or on Facebook.  I’m waiting a few more weeks to tell everyone.  I’ve got my fingers and toes crossed that everything will go okay.  I’m such a worrier.

😀

I want to be a cat in my next life.

I was minding my own business, folding laundry and cleaning the bedroom when this random act of cuteness occurred:

Could they be cuter?  Here’s the babies up close:

I’m going to miss my cats when I move.  They’ll live with my mom, so they’ll have a good home.  I don’t have to worry about them.  I’ve been packing up, giving away all our stuff and praying that I’m leaving next week.  Keep praying for us, please!  Thank you all so much.

Whack-A-Kitty, Even Peta Says It’s Okay!

May 29, 2009

I got my first blog shout-out this week from the very funny Amanda Blog and Kiss.

So as a thank you, here is one of her favorite things:  cute animals caught on tape.

This is for you Amanda!

This video, believe it or not, stirred up a little controversy on the web regarding animal cruelty.  Are you freaking crazy?  Cats getting bopped lightly on the head with a padded cardboard tube is not cruel, it’s down right adorable.  Even Peta agrees, their statement on the video was this: “The video is cute. We don’t see any abuse.”

Killer Cats!

May 21, 2009

***Disclaimer: Anyone highly sensitive towards birds should read at their own risk***

Springtime in Texas is spectacular, we have wild flowers blooming, bright new green leaves, azure blue skies filled with white puffy clouds, birds singing and baby animals being born…except in my yard.  During spring my yard becomes a baby bird killing field.

I’ve got three cats, well really four, but the fourth is my mom’s cat Pearl.  Pearl plays surrogate mom to the two kittens but really she is just a giant kitten herself.  Hubby and I have been living with my mom ever since my step-dad died last year.

Pearl in silk pillow heaven...

Pearl in silk pillow heaven...

All of our cats are master hunters, and I can’t really say one is any better than the others.  They all catch their fair share of rodents, geckos, snakes, and June bugs…but springtime is open season on baby birds.  I even catch them climbing the trees in the backyard trying to pluck them out of nests.  When I see this I try to spray them with the hose, but I can’t be in the backyard all day and my sneaky cats know this.  I try everything, they even all have bells on their collars, but nothing saves those birds.

For two summers when I was a teenager I worked at an animal rescue facility.  During the spring each day people would bring in baby birds their cats had chewed.  I would always tell the kind, soft-hearted citizen than we would do our best to save the bird, and they would leave with their conscious feeling a little lighter.  The truth was 90% of the time I would have to walk to the back room and immediately euthanize the bird, you see cat’s mouths are so filled with bacteria, infection would have killed the birds slowly and painfully if I had not put them down.  Once in a blue moon we’d get birds that weren’t bit very much or baby birds that had just fallen out of the nest and had been lucky enough to be found by a human not a cat or dog.  Those were the birds I would nurse back to health and then release when they were strong enough to fly.  Those were always really good days.

When I woke up this morning I went into the living room, and I immediately notice Leele, Ecko and Pearl gathered suspiciously behind the dinning room table.  I suspected they had something back there, and one look at their guilty cat faces, I knew.  I go behind the table and lift up a painting that was sitting on the floor leaning against a wall, and hiding behind it is a baby pigeon.  I can deal with the cats catching birds, but when they insist on bringing their prize into the house is where I draw the line, for obvious reasons.  I tried to grab the bird but it scrambled under a cabinet, and I’m thinking, “Oh shit how am I going to move this heavy-ass piece of furniture by myself…” but lucky for me Ecko crawled under and retrieved it as soon as it disappeared.  Seeing my chance to get the bird outside without having to touch it, I pick up Ecko with the bird still in her mouth.  The little bitch growls at me!!  I’m praying out loud that she will not drop the bird before I can get them both to the backdoor, but as soon as I open the door she drops it…of course.  I grab the bird, and toss it outside with the kittens in hot pursit.  Ecko ends up eating it outside (not the whole thing, just the meaty parts) which is okay.  I’d rather them eat what they catch rather than just play with it until it’s dead…I find it slightly more humane…

Purr Therapy

May 11, 2009

I am lonely as hell without my husband and what’s more I can’t sleep.  I tried for a few hours tonight but I just can’t turn my brain off.  I need to find a lawyer today and that’s all I can think about.

In the mean time what’s been getting me through (besides my wonderful friends and family) are my kitties.

Ecko

Ecko

When I get really stressed out or sad I go get my loudest purr-er, Ecko and hold her on my shoulder with my ear pressed against her body.  I find the purring has a calming effect.  She’s less than a year old but she already weighs almost 10 lbs!  She’s such a fatty (Fatty is actually her nickname) that she never misses a meal, snack or sub-snack.  She is also the loudest meow-er I’ve ever met, almost deafening.  She prefers to greet me in the mornings by meowing in my face, stepping on my chest with her lead feet and then head butting me in the chin with her face.  It actually hurts!  I love her to death anyways, she so affectionate.

Leele

Leele

Her sister Leele is another sweetie.  When she was younger she broke her hip (it’s healed completely now) and had kidney problems so she stayed little and scrawny compared to her fat-ass sister.  She has the most pitiful meow to go with the pitiful story, she kind of sounds like a little lamb.  She’s got a shyer personality and likes to get affection rather than give it, which I’m always happy to oblige.  Her kidney problems also seem to have cleared up and she’s gaining lots of weight now.

DSCN4925On to my third, and favorite cat, Otis.  He was the first cat that I ever adopted myself and I got him back in college. He’s a total mama’s boy. When I adopted him, the lady was actually trying to talk me out of it because he was such a loud mouth (and he was, he threw a tantrum after I put him back in the cage at the shelter, he wanted to be with me that bad!).  But there was no talking me out of him, it was love at first sight.  Besides he was the only kitten at the shelter that wasn’t terrified of me, and he came out of the cage wanting to play.  He’s still a talker, not as loud as he used to be, but I swear he says “mama” (I have witnesses!) and occasionally tries to speak to me in cat morse code.  He’s a cuddler, I even find him cuddled up with inanamate objects:

Since my husband got arrested they’ve all been paying extra attention to me, and offer their kitty love.  They know what’s up.
